It won’t take music fans long to figure out the purpose behind Funk Phenomena, the latest project from Koosh and DJ Murge.
"The first three letters of funk, that’s what the night is about," Murge says. "Having fun."
The pair of well-travelled DJs with deep Victoria roots have been developing the bi-monthly night for the better part of two years. Not only was it designed to put the emphasis on fun, the mandate is a reliance on vinyl. Chinatown Events specializes in analog sounds, with only the choicest cuts for consumption.
A reliance on original LPs lets Funk Phenomena and its crate-digging creators explore the outer roots of the genre, from the Danish electronic duo Laid Back to complex Latin polyrhythms. The purpose? To attract a new generation of music fans who may not be schooled in the rich history of disco and funk. The result? One club under a groove whose residents get up to get down.
