Victoria International Jewish Film Festival: Tel Aviv on Fire (2018)
97 minutes. Comedy/Drama/Romance
Winner of top prizes at the Haifa and Venice film festivals, Sameh Zoabi’s comedy depicts the Israeli-Palestinian conflict through a quirky lens. Salam is a charming but unsure 30-year-old Palestinian living in Jerusalem. He lands a job on the Palestinian soap opera "Tel Aviv on Fire." To reach the studio in Ramallah, Salam must pass through an Israeli checkpoint. There he encounters the Israeli commander, Assi, whose wife is devoted to the soap opera. Soon, Assi is helping Salam with the soap opera's script and boosting Salam's career. But Assi and the show's backers disagree over the show's direction, and Salam is caught in the middle. If he's to resolve the clash and keep his life on track, Salam must apply all of the skills he has developed as a screenwriter.
